Aquatics Manager

Springfield, MA

The Aquatics Manager oversees the safe operations and quality programming of the Springfield JCC’s indoor aquatics center. This position is responsible for developing and implementing a wide variety of WSI swim lessons, aquatics fitness classes, and other programs and activities that serve the needs of our community. The Aquatics Manager leads by example and ensures professional supervision of all lifeguards and swim instructors, in order to provide a safe, enjoyable aquatics experience for members, class participants, families, and guests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate lifeguards and WSI-certified swim instructors

  • Ensure quality, consistency, and safety measures for all swim lessons and aquatics activities

  • Manage weekly schedules for lifeguards and swim instructors, actively communicating with staff to ensure all shifts/classes are covered

  • Continually review and enhance aquatics programming to meet the needs of the community and ensure alignment with department goals and operational priorities

  • Serve as point-person for adaptive aquatics program, in coordination with the JCC’s Kehillah Special Needs department

  • Provide back-up support and fill in where needed in the absence of regularly scheduled swim instructor or lifeguard

  • Respond to aquatics-related inquiries in a professional manner

  • Build positive relationships with class participants, parents, members, and staff 

  • Enforce aquatics safety rules consistently and fairly

  • Keep a safe and clean pool environment at all times, including maintaining equipment, monitoring water chemistry, and keeping up-to-date records

  • Ensure compliance with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations, including program standards and pool safety plans

  • Direct all pool maintenance concerns promptly to the Facilities department

  • Update the weekly published pool/lane schedule as well as class rosters and documents needed for swim lessons

  • Review staff timesheets and manage aquatics payroll in a timely manner

  • Develop and track department budget, in conjunction with Wellness and Recreation Director

  • Plan and facilitate lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid, and CPR trainings

  • Actively participate in designated staff meetings and special events

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Progressive aquatics experience, including program development, staff supervision, and pool operations

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Reliable, professional, and detail oriented

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to successfully prioritize and respond to a variety of tasks, including an emergency response to members or visitors in the pool

  • A positive attitude with the ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Working knowledge of aquatics best practices, operations, and trends

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and When To Work

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends

Certifications and Training Requirements

  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications for both infant/child and adult 

  • Current Lifeguard Certification

  • Lifeguard Instructor Certification (completed within 90 days of hire)

  • WSI Certification (completed within 90 days of hire)

  • Certified Pool Operator (completed within 120 days of hire)
